Last week the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced a broad public consultation in the hope of gaining an insight into the appeal of road cycling. The survey closed after a week with more than 22,300 people having given their opinions.

The online survey was only available between Wednesday 10th July and Tuesday 16th July, but in that time residents of 134 countries from five continents took part in the consultation.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the United States, France, Spain, Belgium and Italy were the best represented countries, with a high number of responders also coming from the United Kingdom, Germany, Colombia, Australia, Russia and Brazil. Perhaps only the Netherlands being a notable absentee.

The goal of the survey was to gain some insight from the general public into what may (or may not) make road cycling more exciting. Questions covered numerous topics ranging from team budgets to the use of ear pieces, and even what live data fans would like to see during races.

David Lappartient, UCI President, said: ‘The consultation launched by the UCI to assess public opinion on the appeal of road cycling and expectations regarding its future gave all interested parties an opportunity, for the first time, to express their thoughts.

‘The huge number of responses received gives cause for satisfaction and provides an excellent foundation which we can build on, together with all stakeholders, to make road cycling even more interesting and popular.

The consultation process will now move onto its second stage where the UCI will engage with wider stakeholders - such as teams, riders, organisers, media groups, and broadcasters - through a series of interviews and discussions.

Together, it is hoped that the overall consultation will inform a series of proposals to be drawn up and put before the Professional Cycling Council and the UCI Management Committee for their approval in 2020.
