As a Hackaday writer, you can never predict where the comments of your posts will go. Some posts seem to be ignored, while others have a good steady stream of useful feedback. But sometimes the comment threads just explode, heading off into seemingly uncharted territory only tangentially related to the original post. Such was the case with [Steven Dufresne]’s recent post about decimal time, where the comments quickly became a heated debate about the relative merits of metric and imperial units. As I read the thread, I recalled any of the numerous and similarly tangential comments on various reddit threads bashing the imperial system, and decided that enough was enough. I find the hate for the imperial system largely unfounded, and so I want to rise to its defense. What is a system of units anyway? At its heart, is just a way to measure the world. I could very easily measure the length and width of a room using my feet, toe to heel. Wessex Water’s award-winning Re-Rounder, inspired by heart surgery techniques, helps get deformed sewer networks back into shape. Jamie Hailstone reports. They say inspiration can come from anywhere but, in the case of Wessex Water’s multi-awarding sewer repair robot, it came from human heart surgery. The Re-Rounder device, which recently won a hat trick of awards from the United Kingdom Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT), has been designed and built to bring 150-millimetre diameter sewer pipes, which have suffered up to 25 per cent deformation, back to their original shape prior to CIPP lining. The robot picked up the UKSTT’s Innovative Product and Renovation Water and Wastewater Sector prizes, along with the overall Project of the Year award. It comprises a robot that ‘re-rounds’ the pipe by leaving in place a metal stent, much like the ones now used by heart surgeons. The stents are made from stainless steel and are laser cut to allow expansion of the stent, without the need for a traditional “metal-on-metal” rachet system used by the pneumatic systems on the market. The educational event included examining super interesting slides under the microscope, and then looking at three dimensional models of different cells using a huge projector screen.  The event also offered different science related extremely interactive activities for all ages. Dr. Jennifer Friedman said she and her husband Dr. Ronen Friedman are proponents of educating parents, not just on their own cases, but on the science of what they are doing.  During the event they were looking at different cell types under the microscope and asking the kids if they could figure out what they were looking at. They had a good time and Dr. Ronen led a lecture with a big projector and screen. The parents were involved to help make sure the kids were relaxed and having fun. It’s called the Apple Device, and is sure to be a game changer in the field of low-power, Internet-enabled computing. First off, some specs.
